A Peace That Surpasses Our Understanding

Written by Leah Klotz

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.
I do not give to you as the world gives.
Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. — John 14:27

I don’t know about you but I haven’t been feeling a lot of peace as of late. In my heart, in my family, in my community, in my world, there’s so much conflict that it feels like I’m under a dark cloud. Maybe you can relate.

In the above passage, Jesus is telling the disciples that they should not be scared because the Holy Spirit will always be with us, giving us peace. He does not mean peace as in calmness but peace as in wholeness. So what do we do when we feel far from whole? What about when it feels like there’s chaos and despair in our lives? How do we feel God’s peaceful presence within us in times like these?

We can take comfort in God’s promise that He is with us in times of anxiety. The peace He gives us is far greater than anything in this world. It is knowing we don’t have to be the ones who hold all the wisdom for He will sustain us and give us reason to hope. No matter the chaos and despair, God stays close, always.

Let’s try a breath prayer today.

As you inhale, pray these words: “The Holy Spirit is with me.”

As you exhale, think: “Jesus brings peace.”
