The Peaceable Kingdom: All Can Live Together in Peace
Written by Susan Daniels
The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. — Isaiah 11:6
When our children were growing up, we had lots of pets – dogs, cats, gerbils, iguanas, fish, rabbits, finches, and a turtle. Most of the time when there was more than one animal in our house at the same time, they all got along well with each other. Although sometimes the poor dogs were told to behave themselves, as they were the only trainable pets!
Soon Christmas will be here again, and we will celebrate how Jesus came to us as a baby. In this Bible verse the prophet Isaiah talks about Jesus coming as a little child who will lead us all – animals and people, too. The animals will live together in peace – wolves with lambs, leopards with goats, cows with lions. Can you imagine a world like this? Where animals of all kinds and all people would get along and live in peace together?
One of the places that we can try and make peace is in our homes. We can work to get along with our family members - our brothers and sisters, our moms and dads, and others who may live with us. What will you do this Advent Season to bring peace into your home?
Jesus, Prince of Peace, we ask you to help us to be peacemakers. Help us show others how to live together in peace for the good of your creation. Amen.
