God is Bigger than the Boogieman
Written by Rev. Jim Stein
But the angel said to [the shepherds], “Do not be afraid, for see, I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. — Luke 2:10-11
When I was little I didn’t talk much about being scared. That didn’t mean I wasn’t. And now as a father and grandfather I still have times when I’m afraid. I don’t think that being afraid ever goes away. My mom and dad told me, however, that God was always looking after me and was protecting me against things or people that scared me.
At Christmas time I have always thought about the shepherds who were frightened when they heard the angel come and talk to them in the middle of the night. In the darkness a voice rang out, and the Bible says that they were terrified. But the angel told them that they didn’t have to be afraid. God was sending his Son into the world to bring healing, forgiveness and peace to the whole world.
This little Veggie Tales song expresses this well:
God is bigger than the boogieman.
He’s bigger than Godzilla
or the monsters on TV.
Oh, God is bigger than the boogieman,
and he’s watching out for you and me!
Dear God, thank you for always being with me. Remind me of your strong love for me and help me know that you are always on my side. Amen.
