The Nativity of Christ
SOUTH TRANSEPT:
The Nativity of Christ
“They shall call him Immanuel.”
The crown on the top of the window depicts Christ as the Prince of Peace. The “IHS” are taken from the first three letters of the Greek spelling of Jesus’ name, though to be most correct it could read “IHC.” Two angels are shown each holding a shield. The one angel is shown holding the Star of Bethlehem, while the other holds the Messianic Rose. A broad beam of light goes from the angel to the star to the Holy Infant and is meant to symbolize the heavenly origin, or the divine origin of the Lord. The animals further heighten the stable scene.
