The Baptism of Jesus

THIRD NAVE WINDOW:

The Baptism of Jesus

“This is my Beloved Son.”

This window portrays for us the baptism of Jesus. The shell is a traditional symbol of baptism and from it flows the water of Jesus. Christ is here represented by the IHS which are from the first three letters of the Greek word for Jesus. The Latin inscription “ecce agnus dei,” “Behold the Lamb of God” are the words spoken by John the Baptist after the baptism of Jesus. The hand coming out of the cloud is a representation for God, the Hold Spirit is symbolized by the dove. The bottom symbol of fire reminds us of the words of John the Baptist who, speaking of Jesus, said, “Whose fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge His floor, and gather His wheat into the garner but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” Luke 3:17.
